Preening

I guess it's not fair to say the only thing these owls do is mate. On occasion, they preen each other too.

But wait....

I was only away for a week and when I left on 1.4.06, there had been only ONE owl in the box for weeks.. :-{

That owl had been, and seems to still be looking rather sick or at least quite disheveled. Frieda and Diego were both very healthy looking owls, with neat feathers and clear eyes. This single owl did not look like either one of our pair. It frequently worried me that if it was Frieda or Diego, that they had contracted... that dreaded west nile virus or, you know, that other Bush-scare-tactic-of-the-year-flu-thing.... avian flu...

God forbid people ever start taking that avian flu scare seriously, because if they DO, they may begin random killing sprees of wild birds... :-[ like that hoof and mouth disease practice of killing millions of healthy creatures to avoid expensive testing and vacines...

But I digress. . . So I must have missed something monumantal. . . like "He's BACK!!" "The AWOL Diego has flown back to the coop!"

How do we even know it's him or her? I was not even sure if the remaining owl was one of our friends. Maybe it was a new resident .

If it is one of our owl friends, do you have any ideas of what happened to the missing owl during their long absence ?

I may be asking questions that everyone knows the answers to already, In which case, please forgive me and just point me in the right direction for the answers!

Thank you for cleaning the fog off the lenses! So happy that for all the cmage we have caused over the last year of dismantling the EPA and the ESA, that wildness still thrives! Long Live Frieda and Diego!!
